At that time the big spenders \u2014 primarily Chinese tycoons \u2014 flocked to the country, helping to turn it into the world\u2019s most expensive city for luxury goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lately, demand has ebbed. Prices for high-end condominiums have declined since September, while sales of flashy cars like Bentleys and Ferraris have plunged. Big-ticket items from golf memberships to 30-year-old whiskys have also suffered price declines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Whisky Prices Fell in Singapore Recently<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Year-on-year change in prices in US dollars<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/toaster\/v2\/charts\/5ro69jood3cpzgutvxr38b0j1idgvyeu.html?brand=wealth&amp;webTheme=wealth&amp;web=true&amp;hideTitles=true<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A myriad of factors have led to this, from high interest rates to tax hikes targeting foreign wealth. But increasingly, observers point to another reason: the rich are embracing more low-profile spending to avoid the attention that displays of opulence might attract. This comes after a major crackdown on money laundering in Singapore, and as resentment stirs among the local populace about rising costs of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Chinese are not buying the way they used to,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sg.linkedin.com\/in\/amritabanta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u963f\u7c73\u7279\u62c9\u00b7\u73ed\u5854<\/strong><\/a>, managing director at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/2217173D:SP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u654f\u667a\u54a8\u8be2\u4e0e\u7b56\u7565<\/strong><\/a>, a luxury consulting firm. \u201cThere\u2019s a broad cloud impacting the ways they spend money in Singapore,\u201d she added, pointing to the recent\u00a0S$3 billion laundering scandal\u00a0and the impact of China\u2019s weakened economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past 12 months, wealthy individuals in Singapore seem to be favoring discreet over more overt expressions of wealth, according to a report by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/BAER:SW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Julius Baer Group Ltd<\/a>\u00a0that was released in late June.
